Physics Studies Frequencies and Wavelengths

This week Physics students performed a lab to study frequencies and wavelengths. Each lab group used a PVC pipe and a microphone sensor along with a computer. By hitting the end of the pipe first with one finger, then with the palm, the students were able to set up two different frequencies in the pipes and see them visibly on their computers. The computer recorded the waveform of each sound and the students used the data to calculate the frequency of each wave. Students then sketched what the wave would look like inside each pipe and used that to qualitatively compare the wavelengths and frequencies.
