Organization in the Middle
Organization as a characteristic is often thought of as an inherent trait: you are either naturally inclined to organize or you are not. However, organization is a teachable skill, one that is critical to success as a student, parent, or working professional.
At the Brook Hill School we are committed to teaching the whole student which includes non-academic skills, strategies, and techniques such as organization that contribute and build well-rounded, well-prepared students. It is important not only to model these skills, but to actually physically take the students through organizational processes in order to show and have them do what organization should look like.
On Wednesday, the 6th grade students were taught a lesson on organization by Mrs. Mize, the Academic Center for Excellence director. After watching a short video on the differences between an organized and unorganized student, Mrs. Mize taught the students steps to increase and build their organizational habits.
- Step 1- Declutter
- Step 2- Get and use a planner
- Take a look ahead every Sunday
- Use folders and binders
- Have an organized desk/work area
- Implement daily tasks such as checking planner each night
To put the newfound practices to work, Mrs. Mize had each student empty, clean out, and organize their backpacks. In addition, each student received a handout on how to clean out their backpacks and lockers as well as a checklist to complete each Sunday.
