Faith & Science
This week students in Mr. Bunger’s Chemistry class had a unique opportunity to explore the complexities and subtleties of the relationship between science and faith. It is one of the many examples of how our faculty weave the Christian worldview into everything that they do.
“I was given an opportunity to evaluate a newly written curriculum designed to help students better understand the relationship between science and faith and I decided that Resurrection Week would be a good time to fit that into my lesson plans. As a class we talked about the different ways the relationship has been viewed in the past, with some seeing it as a war to be won while others view the two as different paths. In order to help the students see the complexity involved they were asked to place statements like “God provides creatures with what they need to grow” and “Rain is caused by water vapor cooling and condensing” into different categories. Some of these categories were: Faith and science agree, People of faith agree, scientists have varying views, etc. This helped students to realize that there are many subtleties that make dividing science and faith difficult. I enjoyed being able to interact with the students in a more complex conversation and helping them to understand some of the nuances involved in relating faith and science.” – Travis Bunger, Science Department Chair
