Creating Table Salt in Chemistry
Continuing their study of acids and bases, Ms. Adams’ Chemistry students performed a neutralization reaction between a strong acid, HCl, and a strong base, NaOH. Acid/base neutralization reactions yield water and a salt, in this case, NaCl, common table salt. After performing the neutralization using phenolphthalein to determine the equivalence point, students boiled off the water, leaving a NaCl residue.
In their post lab work, students supplied chemical equations for these processes and determine how efficiently they worked by determining their percent yield.
